ACM Ellis
Alexander Charles Mortimer Ellis was my Grandpa. He was a man deeply touched by the war in France that he became embroiled in. I remember the terrible dreams that he endured on nights that I stayed with him. He still has two sons living. Mortimer who is 92, and Alec who is 88, as of this day, 31/05/2009. Biography
Born 1896 at Warren NSW enlisted at Narromine 1916.
Wanted to enlist earlier but was too short only 64.75 inches (5ft 4 and 3/4 inches).
Lewis Gunner Number 1 and served on the Western Front, the Somme (Villers Brettoneux, Albert and Hamel.
In both battles of Amiens on 25 April and 8/9 Aug 1918.
Awarded the Military Medal on 8/9 Aug 1918 for action at Villers Brettoneux.

George Ashley was in the 11th Battalion, B Coy, 3rd Bgde., leaving Fremantle on the Ascancius. He was on board the HMS Chelmer, part of the second wave at the landing. They landed on the beach just south of Hells Spit, and north of Gaba Tepe, with the objective of taking Baby 700 Hill.
