Incorrect name on service record
My grandfather, Walter Daniel Cotton, appears in several service records held by the National Archives, under the name Walter David Cotton. This is incorrect. His middle name was DANIEL.
He appears twice on the AIF nominal roll. Once as Walter David Cotton with a regimental no: 1036, a joining date of 29/05/15 and occupation as chemist’s assistant. Elsewhere on nominal roll he is recorded as Walter D Cotton with the regimental no: 1694, joining date of 30/06/15 and occupation as margarine maker.
This record states that he embarked at Melbourne on HMAT. A64 Demosthenes on 29/10/1915. A record on AIF Project lists him as Walter David Cotton, reg no: 1036, enlistment date: 29/05/1915 and having embarked on board HMAT A62 Wandilla on 09/11/1915. All records apply to Walter Daniel Cotton but, apart from the middle name, I’m unsure which has the correct details.
